Snake Avoidance Traning

An opportunity for your dog to learn how to be safe from any snake they might encounter, whether you are around or not

Snake Avoidance Training Methodolgy?

Western Australia is home to approximately 128 snakes – 87 of them venomous.

What do you need to know about the SAT we provide:

The total cost of the training is $400 per dog.

Covering two (2) training days – which will be a week apart.

Training facility located in Keysbrook, WA.

We use live snakes – not snake skins or fake snakes.

Seth Pywell is the pioneering mind behind modern Snake Avoidance Training.

Need to know!

Your dog will need to be fasted for 24hrs before the SAT workshop. But why?

Even if your dog is a very good eater, it must be fasted for 24 hours. No amount of food drive actually makes up for authentic hunger. Authentic hunger is required to help your dog during the “odour recognition” & “contrast” phases of training. The contrast phase is critical as it gives your dog clarity and prevents your dog from making inappropriate associations and thus sabotaging the reliability of the training.

You need to have a safe and weather-appropriate set up for your vehicle, where your dog can't escape - we recommend a crate at the very least. But why?

While one dog is completing its round, the other dogs will remain safely in their owners’ vehicles. This approach prevents your dog from becoming bored or overstimulated and allows time to process each round before moving on to the next. It also benefits dogs that may not get along well with others, as there’s no direct interaction. Unlike a typical group class where dogs are watching each other, this setup encourages your dog to focus and learn without distraction.

The training runs over two sessions, spaced one week apart. But why?

To avoid overwhelming your dog and to test the retention of the prior lesson a second session is essential. The rule with such learning is multiple lessons in multiple places equals better learning and retention.

First lesson – Odor recognition: Dogs complete around 4-5 rounds, each with a different snake species (Carpet python, Tiger, Mulga, or Western Brown).

Second lesson – Contrast part (aka visual): Dogs are allowed to visually investigate a non-venomous snake in a controlled environment. Preferred species include Carpet python, Pygmy python, Black-headed python, or Common tree snake.

We use live venomous and non-venomous snakes; but why and how dangerous is it to my dog?

Firstly, because of the generalisation principle – it is safer to teach all snakes should be avoided. Every precaution is taken to never put your dog at risk at any time during the SAT Program. However, there is always risk, in this case, the bare minmum.
